What Are Trigger Points and Trigger Point Therapy?
What are trigger points and trigger point therapy?
Muscles are composed of thousands of contractile units called sarcomeres. The term trigger point which was coined in 1942 by Dr. Janet Travell, describes a small patch of sarcomeres that are continuously contracted, resulting in shortening and tightening of the muscle. Trigger point therapy is a technique used to release the contraction of sarcomeres. Therapists will apply finger pressure, which improves blood flow, increases waste removal and helps to break up scar tissue often alleviating pain.
