Heart Rate Recovery

Heart Rate Recovery

Heart Rate recovery is the time it takes for the heart to return to normal after an exercise session. Individuals with high fitness levels tend to recover more quickly as their cardiovascular systems are more efficient. These numbers are often used to determine an individual’s risk for heart disease and sudden mortality. Your heart rate recovery should commence within 1 minute of ceasing exercise. It has two distinct phases. The first is the immediate drop that occurs 1 minute after exercise and the second is the gradual rate at which it decreases up to an hour after exercise. Generally the heart rate should fall by at least 12 beats per minute within the first few minutes after exercise. Fitter people can see drops of up to 25 beats per minute.
