Hydration – How much is enough?

Hydration is something many of us don’t take the time to consider when exercising. Did you know that adults can lose up to 3 liters of water a day and this amount increases further when we exercise! Our bodies are made up of around 55-75% water, so it is vital we drink plenty of fluids.

So how much fluid should we be consuming everyday? The experts advise we each should drink around 6-8 glasses (approx 150ml/glass) of water per day. This amount needs to increase further when we exercise. We need more water when we exercise to replace the water we lose through sweat; however this is not the only reason. Other important reasons why we should increase our intake of fluid before and after exercise relate to the fact that the body requires water to transport important minerals and vitamins around the body. Macro-minerals, otherwise known as, electrolytes help to regulate muscle & nerve function, two components imperative to exercise. So next time you go for a workout, remember to take your drink bottle with you!
